Presenting who you are is key! According to an article in the youth metro daily MX, young people have been applying for jobs in the worst of standards.
MX explains that ‘young people have been applying for jobs using text message language and turning off prospective employers by revealing too much about themselves on MySpace and Facebook’.
It was certainly an interesting article, because if it is true, then us Gen Y’rs needs to have a good look at ourselves and how we are applying for jobs. We need to be willing to be as professional as possible in order to secure a job. The standards we use for resumes, cover letters and essential criteria when going for a job is what could place us in the shortlist.
If you don’t know how to correctly sell yourself, see the articles on my site, or google a company who can do some one on one coaching with you so you can succeed and get your foot in the door.
We can see this first hand with the infamous recent case of Kyle Doyle that you may have received in email circulation. He was found out by his employer through Facebook that he wasn’t really sick and instead he had a night out on the drink the night before. The full story can be seen here.
Nothing is ever sacred on Facebook or Myspace. Think twice before slandering your boss, your company, or the people close to you. You never know, the people that you think you are secretly discussing about behind their back could lead you to your next big job opportunity.
First impressions when going for jobs should be second nature. Being well presented not only physically, but mentally when going for a job as well as keeping your integrity intact will help put you in good stead for job opportunities.
